It sounds like the experience of a lifetime. Absolutely wonderful people in Africa. Yes it’s transactional. You give the money, they give us experience we could never have.
I just finished reading the verbal painting you posted. I'm so very happy to see that you and B are literally living life to its fullest. AWESOME! ENJOY IT! It's hard to believe that it's been almost a year since you moved to Madrid. I sincerely hope that you've been able to extend your time abroad. If the humidity is getting to you, as of this writing, here in NYC, the temperature is 12 above zero and with the windchill it's a balmy 0 degrees lol! Get in touch when you can. Much to catch up on.
"I felt extremely white, privileged and American." This is mentioned more than once. You are who you are. Also I am not sure what "privileged" is anymore. It is all relative. Compared to the Saudis we are all poor.
I visited all the places you mentioned. I was ona safari tour bus for 12 days with the champion drinkers of the world...the Brits, Kwis and Aussies. My cousin is married to a Tanzanian man and lived in Zanzibar ---we visited her a dozen years ago. She now lives outside of Arusha.
The article scooted along with great descriptions and feelings. Being away from the internet for a few days is good mental health. Looking forward to another adventure.
This is wonderful, Michael! You give such a detailed description of the action —external events and internal reactions—that I could really imagine your experience. Your writing is beautiful—‘dirt veins leading to the heart of something mysterious, strange.’ The locals aggressively pushing their wares is everywhere, in my experience, at least in most historic areas of interest where travelers are drawn, Ephesus to Istanbul, as you know. Their reality, our discomfort. And your being cut off from the Internet sounds like a good thing—again, uncomfortable. Writing is your life blood, so at least you could keep journaling. Travel can be as unsettling as it is thrilling. That’s why it feels so good to get home.
What a great adventure Live and have fun in each new adventure
