Hey buddy, great to see you on your visit up here and to read your story of the trip. Stoked for you getting THE CREW out into the world and fun to visit some bookstores together. You just about convinced me to visit a "meeting" sometime—as a reporter of course!
Wow, what a testament to the power of nature. Your emotional and physical sojourn feels intimate, honest, and the setting so familiar, like an old friend. Wonderful.
Interesting. The stuff that most resonated was your camping journey because that's what I most want to vicariously experience and remember from so many years ago.
Yes. Backpacking is one of the best gifts my father ever gave me. I've always loved doing it. I remember being in the high Sierras once years ago and it was night and I did a little walk with my headlamp and at one point I paused and just stood there for a couple minutes: The silence was so total that you could "hear" it. Powerful.
Keep smashing it. I love your writing. Half way through your book. :) I physically felt for you mum when the wine was stolen... (Im assuming its all autobiographical ? !
Thanks! And: So glad you're reading the novel! Excellent. Well, it's funny. When I started writing that book in 2008 (you heard right), it was basically thinly veiled memoir. Over the years it became more mythic and blurry and fictional. I'd say at this point it's probably 65% autobiographical. Something like that. I hewed to the "truth" (according to my slippery memory during a time of intense drinking), but when it felt right I let my imagination roll.
Thank you for sharing your journey! I need some mountain time. I've lived in the Bay Area most of my adult life but recently came back to Colorado where I went to high school and university. At any rate, the mountains beckon. Thanks for reminding me of nature's soothing, clarifying power and of the Bay Area's magic.
Yes! You're welcome. Man, I LOVE backpacking, nature, solitude. I miss the Bay Area, too. But I don't think we'll move back there, despite the temptation. Spain beckons. But yes: Get out there, man!
Thanks for sharing your journey with me. I was born in San Francisco, and lived in the Bay Area until 9 years ago when we moved to the foothills. I too believe the area has changed, but there are still many aspects of the Bay Area that I will always treasure.
I had a relationship by both phone & email with a couple in Berkeley. I'd like to visit them & just be a stereotypical tourist before getting TOO OLD to enjoy it.

Ha!! We'll get you there. One of these days.
Points added for Born and Raised. Then subtracted for riding in a Prius ☺️
Believe me, I get it. The wife's car. She has taken over my Nissan Leaf. I am self-conscious about the White Penis. 😮
You have your reputation to consider 😂
😂
❤️Thoroughly enjoyed your trip. So happy you were rejuvenated by the adventure. ❤️

The silence especially.

Although I don't know any of the places or people mentioned, this felt very real and compelling to me. A sign of the excellence of the writing.
Thank you! I appreciate that. Glad you enjoyed it.

God how I miss that drive through Nicasio to the coast. Thank you for sharing!
It's a gorgeous drive, for sure! Thanks for reading!
Thanks for sharing this great trip. I totally get you on the OCD stuff. I struggle with it daily. Appreciate you!
Thanks! Have you written about the OCD?
Not yet.

Well said! Yes! There is still so much richness there, despite the changes over the past decade.

& I have mild to moderate OCD, too.
Good ole Berkeley! I miss living there (near there). Glad I'm not alone re the OCD.
I want to experience a CA earthquake, since I rode out a tropical storm in FL near the Cape in the 80s.
THC helps my OCD as well as occasional anxiety attacks.
