I love your Substack. I rec’d it to others. I wasn’t sure how to describe the way you wrote but your off-center left (can’t remember the rest) free thinker description is fairly accurate. I tend to align more w people who don’t lean this way or that way, but examine each issue as it comes and make up their own minds. And aren’t afraid to pick a side when it’s needed. As for the expectations and rejections, I’m sure you know that most of the best authors were rejected hundreds of times before being picked up and winning something at the end of it. Sometimes it’s just not the right time and there’s something waiting to be finessed before it’s ready for the world. What I have found is when you have a strong and clear voice, and aren’t afraid to display it in your writing, your readers inevitably find you. The ones who leave aren’t it. And that’s a service they’ve done for you. I say this knowing the sting of dejection and rejection. I look forward to your work. Write on.
Great observations... it's life. I have several friends and people I've worked with who built up their facebook connections and would post items on there to rave reviews and feedback only to find once the book was done... he didn't sell one copy. Well I bought one... but the experience of these two authors taught me about "facebook friends". While you are not addressing this directly, I think it offers the same reflection in real life. True friends and supporters are very, very hard to find... doesn't matter so much if they are friends or family.
This week I am grateful for the few who are and give a heartfelt shout out to the rest!
Happy Thanksgiving from up in Canada! This is a great diary entry, thank you. I enjoyed all the little tidbits of your life, learning about the books you are reading and feeling kindred (I don't think that's actually a feeling) about the whole Substack thing. Posts like this make me feel we are all being human together.
I love your political & historical insights. I love the context, research and how you frame things. We can all get caught up in feedback and it's true, people subscribe and unsubscribe for a variety of reasons (most of them, not personal or a reflection of your work). It inspires me to do more of my personal writing (outside of get hired in Hollywood business.). Just wanted to say thank you for being consistent in your writing. You might want to consider writing pieces for the Free Press. Just a thought.
