Love the video post, Michael. One thing you didn’t mention about publishing, or not getting published by a traditional company is context—in the last decade, getting published in the largest genre of all—fiction—much less literary fiction, is incredibly competitive with hundreds of thousands of fiction writers submitting online to fewer agents and fewer publishing houses. Non-fiction has an easier, more targeted audience—coffee table books, cookbooks, celebrity memoirs and self help. In fiction, agents are less willing to take risk. Even with well-know authors, self-publishing has become a credible path to reach audiences. The catch, as you pointed out, is in having a platform with high visibility. You’ve done very well on SubStack in a relatively short time, and seeing The Crew in print was a milestone! Keep writing, keep talking, keep sharing your world views with us!
