Substack is uncanny. I joined as a largely retired person wanting to write a book in retirement that has always rattled around in my head. Just a comment on another Newsletter we apparently share in common, and so brief. I took a peek at your writing and was drawn in. While I've only read a BIT, what I saw here was very engaging. I'll be back. Sometimes I wish my current read list and TBR were shorter :)

About ten days ago I realized I had six books in progress. Thought that more genres would be good for me. I doubt I've ever had three going at once before. Abandoned one and read two in the period since and feel a bit better. The worst is that two of the books were loaners from others and I feel I gotta finish them stat. Finding your reading tonight was unexpected.

Oh boy do I relate to that! I’ve always been a voracious reader but especially during the pandemic period I pretty much always have a few books going at once. I have more time though since I’m freelance and I don’t watch TV, etc. I just finished the 900-page Battle Cry for Freedom: The Civil War Era by McPherson.

Awesome! I am an active member in a History Bookclub for 7+ years. The group often is shy to take on the long books. We are voting for next years books and our schedule will be set for 2023 soon. I nominated two rather long books which were excellent. I doubt they'll get the votes. Rick Perlstein wrote both "Nixonland" and "Before the Storm". I enjoyed both but perhaps too long. I will look into your recommendation. Maybe I can nominate your recommendation in 2024!
